Gross Description -- Hypertension of Unknown Etiology


GROSS DESCRIPTION:

The specimen is received fresh labeled "kidney" and consists of a right kidney with attached segment of ureter and surrounding perirenal fat and adrenal gland. It weighs 600 grams and measures 25.0 x 1.20 x 5.0 cm. Sections show a 3.0 x 2.5 x 2.0 cm. round, encapsulated tumor in the upper pole. The surface of the tumor varies from bright yellow to brown-gray with a foci of hemorrhage and necrosis. The tumor grossly involves the capsule however the renal vein and pelvis are grossly uninvolved. The remainder of the renal parenchyma is grossly unremarkable. The tumor seems to involve the perirenal fat. The cortical surface of the kidney is irregular and the cortical thickeness is 1.0 cm. The medulla is tan and grossly unremarkable. No cysts are seen. The adrenal gland is 4.5 x 2.5 x 2.0 cm. Upon sectioning a 2.0 x 2.0 x 1.5 cm. round, gray and soft mass is seen within the adrenal parenchyma. The cortex is smooth and bright yellow.
