Microbiologic Description -- Bacteremia and a Perminent Intravascular Catheter

GRAM STAIN:

The gram stain shows gram negative bacilli.

CULTURES:

The organism was isolated on 5% sheep blood (SB) agar and eosin-methylene blue (EMB) agar. The colonies are shiny, slightly mucoid, and raised with entire edges. The EMB plate is shown following incubation for 1 and 5 days. The 1 day old plate shows slightly mucoid colonies with a mild pink hue suggesting weak fermentation. By the 5th day the colonies are noticeably mucoid and overtly pink proving the fermenting nature of the organism.

BIOCHEMICAL PROFILE:

The butt of the TSI tube is slightly yellow suggesting that the organism is a slow fermenter. The citrate tube is positive as the slant turned blue. The organism is not motile and is indole negative. The ornithine and lysine are both negative. The organism is catalase, urease and oxidase positive. The organism was negative for H2S production.
