Electron Microscopy -- Acute Renal Failure

ELECTRON MICROSCOPY:

Two glomeruli were examined and demonstrated markedly expanded mesangial areas (Image 23), with similar material seen focally permeating the glomerular basement membrane (Images 24 and 25). There was also widespread foot process fusion, particularly in areas of nodular amyloid deposition (Image 26). The deposits consisted of fibrillar material composed on non-branching, haphazardly arranged fibrils approximately 10 nanometers in diameter, consistent with amyloid (Image 27). A glomerular arteriole also showed extensive mural amyloid deposition. No discrete, non-amyloidotic, subepithelial, or subendothelial electron dense deposits were identified.
