Gross Description -- Progressive Muscular Weakness

GROSS DESCRIPTION:

The body was cachectic with diffuse atrophy of the musculature. The head showed the typical male pattern baldness of the underlying disease along with marked temporal atrophy. The musculature was grossly atrophied with replacement by connective tissue and adipose tissue. Cardiomyopathy was present. The heart weighed 475 gm and was enlarged with four chamber dilation and biventricular hypertrophy. A small organizing mural thrombus was present in the left ventricle. The effects of the dilated cardiomyopathy were seen in the lungs which had chronic passive congestion, and the liver also showed passive congestion.
