GROSS DESCRIPTION:
A three-level laminectomy exposed an intradural, extramedullary 4.0 x 0.5 x 0.5 cm sausage-shaped mass in the cauda equina. A single fiber, with absent evoked potentials, was identified entering and exiting the mass, consistent with the filum terminale. Grossly, the tumor was dark red, soft, and covered with a smooth, thin capsule.
