GROSS AND MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION:
The intraparotid tumor was grossly multinodular, smooth and yellow with surrounding normal-appearing salivary gland. Low power magnification shows the multinodular nature of the tumor surrounded by normal salivary gland (Figure 2). The expanding nodules show a proliferation of Schwann, fibroblast and perineural-like cells in a loose collagenous and myxoid stroma with entrapped nerve fibers (Figure 3). Normal peripheral nerve twigs are identified in the periphery of the tumor. No increased mitotic activity, hypercellularity, or nuclear pleomorphism is identified. Immunohistochemical stain for S-100 highlights the proliferating Schwann cells in the tumor (Figure 4).
