Sara A. Monaghan, MD
Associate Professor of Pathology

Dr. Monaghan is a hematopathologist experienced in adult and pediatric bone marrow and lymphoid tissue pathology. She is the medical director of the Clinical Flow Cytometry Laboratory at UPMC Presbyterian. Her research interests focus on graduate medical education for hematopathology fellows, and the pathology and immunophenotyping by flow cytometry of hematolymphoid neoplasms. Her recent paper (Monaghan SA, et al. Am J Clin Pathol 2016;146:107) addresses the relationship between hematopathology fellows' performance on the twice-yearly in-service exam (ASCP FISHE) and performance on the American Board of Pathology (ABP) certifying exam for hematopathology. She is currently collaborating with the American Board of Pathology and the Society for Hematopathology to obtain data intended for use to promote harmonization of fellowship training requirements, the certifying exam and the real-life practice of hematopathology. Most of her publications related to pathology and immunophenotyping have focused on myeloid and plasma cell neoplasms.
