This presentation will begin by recalling the myth of Narcissus and explain its (often missed or unappreciated) psychological content. We will then proceed to discussing how narcissism can exist in many different forms and, especially, how an individual can develop either a “healthy” or “unhealthy” narcissism. The presentation will then examine how the training of healthcare professionals can often admit certain narcissistic dimensions that, among individuals who have a significant need for approval and recognition, can breed a markedly unempathic relational style that can, in the case of physicians especially, further dispose them to a significant risk of malpractice litigation. Antidotes for remedying unhealthy narcissism will be offered.
