Research Interests:

Dr. Yousem is a Professor of Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He has a special interest in inflammatory lung disease and lung transplantation, which originated during his residency at Stanford University Medical Center under the guidance of Thomas V. Colby, M.D. and the late Charles B. Carrington, M.D. Following a surgical pathology fellowship and a junior staff position at Stanford, Dr.Yousem spent two years in the Division of Pulmonary and Mediastinal Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. In 1987 he joined the Pathology Department at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and he now marries his responsibilities in pulmonary pathology with responsibilities as Director of Anatomic Pathology. He has a primary interest in interstitial and small airway inflammatory processes of the lung, and the histopathologic alterations of acute rejection and bronchiolitis obliterans in lung allografts. Most recently, with colleagues Sanja Dacic, Yuri Nikiforov, and Marina Nikiforova, he has embarked on multiple projects focused on utilizing molecular assays to develop histomolecular correlations on pulmonary neoplasia, and to identify molecular predictors of biologic behavior and therapeutic responsiveness. These interests have culminated in a large body of scientific publications and numerous invited lectureships and courses in national and international societies and forums. Dr. Yousem also manages the thoracic pathology fellowship - a one to two year intense learning experience in pulmonary pathology.
