Clinical Expertise

Dr. Swerdlow's expertise is in hematopathology with an emphasis on lymph node and related tissue diagnostic hematopathology using a multiparameter approach that incorporates morphology, flow cytometric and immunohistochemical phenotype, cytogenetic, molecular and clinical data. He is also responsible for oversight of the Division's varied clinical activities that include general hematology laboratories, a flow cytometry laboratory and a variety of diagnostic services.

Research Interests

Dr. Swerdlow's research efforts involve the use of a multiparameter approach to better define, diagnose and understand selected B-cell and some T/NK lymphomas and the post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders. Areas of investigation include the following (some in collaboration with other investigators either at the University of Pittsburgh or elsewhere): multiparameter investigations of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, , CD279/PD-1 expression on lymphoid subsets, S100 positive T cell lymphomas, MYD88 mutations in lymphomas with plasmacytic differentiation, phenotypic recognition of germinal center lymphomas, mantle cell lymphomas with phenotypic/molecular discrepancies, lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates in the breast and additional collaborations as well.
