Superhuman Body: The Future of Medicine: Self-Repair. The Learning Channel.
9 p.m. ET/PT, March 28, 2001.
Nature has a wonderful ability to regenerate, and humans may not be too
far behind. Scientists are already using the body's own cells and tissue
to create new organs and repair damaged ones. They've already successfully
grown a urinary bladder from living tissue, which has been transplanted
into an animal - and it works. And in the case of severe burns, scientists
are growing new skin from discarded foreskin tissue. In fact, a single
infant foreskin - removed during circumcision--can grow enough human skin
to cover six soccer fields. Viewers will learn how the remarkable "stem
cell" is giving us hope in the treatment of a broad variety of illnesses
and disorders.
