Fellow Responsibilities

You will be expected to comply with "Resident Physician Responsibilities" as outlined, adopted, and updated from time to time by the ACGME. These responsibilities currently stated in ACGME's "Essentials of Accredited Residencies in Gradate Medical Education" are included below for your convenience.

  1. Develop a personal program of self study and professional growth with guidance from the teaching staff.
  2. Participate in safe, effective and compassionate patient care under supervision, commensurate with their level of advancement and responsibility.
  3. Participate fully in the educational activities of their program and, as required, assume responsibility for teaching and supervising other residents and students.
  4. Participation in institutional programs and activities involving the medical staff and adhere to established practices, procedures and policies of the institutions.
  5. Participate in institutional committees and councils, especially those that relate to patient care review activities.
  6. Participate in evaluation of the quality of education provided by the program.
  7. Develop an understanding of ethical, socioeconomic, and medical/legal issues that affect graduate medical education and of how to apply cost containment measures in the provision of patient care.

A complete list of benefits for the upcoming academic year is attached. Please be aware that these benefits, including salary, are in effect for the 2003-2004 academic year and that they are usually reviewed and adjusted yearly. If any changes in benefits should occur during any academic year, you will receive notice of the change.

Practice Privileges and Other Activities Outside the Educational Program

These activities are determined by each fellowship program.

Call Schedule and Schedule of Assignments

Assignments and rotations are designed to assure compliance with ACGME accreditation requirements, to provide a varied spectrum of experience for each fellow, and to assure exposure to all phases of pathology training. Assignments are periodically reviewed and, if necessary, revised to ensure that the above conditions are adequately met.

Evaluation and Advancement

Each fellow is evaluated at least biannually by appropriate faculty supervisors. Any problems or concerns which develop during this process are shared with the fellow. Every reasonable attempt is made to provide the resident with counseling, remedial help, schedule alterations, leaves of absences, etc., to accommodate his or her particular needs while ensuring that the ACGME requirements as well as those of the program and clinical assignment site are adequately met. If necessary, a plan for correcting any deficiencies is developed and agreed upon. If the objectives of this plan are not satisfactorily met within an appropriate time frame, recommendations for corrective action, including possible dismissal or probation are considered by the Director of the Training Program and appropriate advisory committees.

Grievance and Appeal

Each fellow receives a copy of the Grievance and Appeal Policy and procedure with orientation to the program. Questions may be brought to the program director.

Sexual Harassment

Each fellow receives a copy of the sexual/racial/ethnic harassment policy with orientation to the training program. Sexual, racial, and ethnic harassment violates UHCP policy as well as state, federal, and local laws and is not permitted or condoned and may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal. Complaints of sexual, racial, or ethnic harassment should be reported to any of the following individuals: the Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education; any Training Program Director or the administrative representative of any UHCP hospital.
