Neuropathology Clinical Fellowship Program

Neuropathology Fellow Responsibilities
The Neuropathology Fellow is responsible for the entire clinical service. He or she must be certain that the service is staffed 24 hours by appropriate personnel at all times and that the service is handled in a professional manner. Personally or indirectly staff all neuropathology conferences.
Surgical Material:
- Review slides prior to signout sessions with attending Neuropathologist; generate tentative diagnosis and differential
- Review daily surgery schedule including imaging studies and clinical histories with attending the night before
- Be proficient in imprints to touch preparations and frozen sections on brain and muscle biopsies
- Review and approve all resident gross and microscopic dictations
Autopsy Material:
- Review and approve all resident gross and micro autopsy dictations
- Evaluate all microscopic slides and signout selected ADRC brains
- Oversee brain cutting at UPMC and Children's Hospital
- Complete all Children's Hospital autopsy neuropathology reports
- Remove brains, with the help of diener on all neuro-cases
- Perform special autopsy procedures (e.g. removal of CSF, peripheral nerve and ganglia)
- Attend and participate in monthly laboratory meetings
Teaching:
- Review with residents their service responsibilities particularly at the beginning of rotation
- Oversee rotating resident compliance with weekly schedule
- Oversee teaching conferences, assume teaching duties commensurate with knowledge
- Perform resident evaluations with attending staff
- Maintain teaching materials (slides, books, manual)
- Participate in Molecular Basis of Neurologic Disease course and also in the Wednesday and Thursday Journal Clubs
Professional Development:
- Prepare interesting cases for the monthly WWW postings
- Oversee Neuropathology presentations at Wednesday clinical Neuroscience conferences
