Mission Statement

The Magee-Womens Hospital Center of Excellence includes Centers of Excellence for Gynecologic Pathology, Breast Pathology and Gynecologic Cytology. Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC has a broad agenda focusing on achieving excellence in clinical service, resident/fellow education and translational research. The Center of Excellence supports diagnostic services at Magee-Womens Hospital, offering skilled interpretation in the surgical pathology of gynecologic, breast and gynecologic cytology. This mission supports the focused efforts of the division of women's health at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. The Center of Excellence is very active in housestaff education with much of the education efforts focused on training of residents through surgical pathology signout experience, case presentation, multiple interdisciplinary conferences and translational research. A wealth of internal material is supplemented by an active consultation service in breast and gynecologic pathology; a slide teaching collection and reference study sets for gynecologic pathology, breast pathology and gynecologic cytology. Resident and fellows are trained in the applications of histochemistry, immunohistology, molecular biologic techniques and clinical pathologic correlations. Most research at Magee-Womens Hospital Department of Pathology is clinically based, with many clinical trials in place, as well as a comprehensive Tumor Registry available to the department. The full resources of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Department of Pathology are available for collaborative studies, especially pertaining to molecular applications.
