DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY PROGRAMS
Residency Program
The Department of Pathology's residency program consists of 33 residents, with slots filled through the National Residency Matching Program. Fully approved training programs for residents are offered in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, and combined anatomic/clinical pathology (AP/CP). Most residents train for four or five years to satisfy ACGME and American Board of Pathology guidelines. The core AP/CP program is three years, and elective time is available to individually tailor the program to meet each resident's specific career objectives.
Rotations are available through all subspecialties of anatomic and clinical pathology, including: general surgical pathology, autopsy, forensic, neuropathology, dermatopathology, transplantation pathology, cytopathology, nephropathology, electron microscopy, image analysis and quantitative histopathology, medical informatics, chemistry, hematology, immunopathology, microbiology, cytogenetics, molecular diagnostics, and blood bank. Residents rotate through Presbyterian, Shadyside, Children's, and Magee-Womens Hospitals, as well as the Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, Allegheny County Coroner's Office, and the Institute for Transfusion Medicine.
Residents go on to a variety of careers in academic and community medical centers, as well as the commercial laboratory and corporate world. Many residents elect to pursue subspecialty fellowship training in Pittsburgh or elsewhere before beginning their career. Residents are encouraged to participate in clinical and basic research projects, and almost all present abstracts at national meetings and publish manuscripts based on their research.
