Pathology at the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS)
The Division of Pathology at the VAPHS provides comprehensive pathology and laboratory medicine services to its three divisions at University Drive (UD) in Oakland, Highland Drive (HD), and Aspinwall (Heinz Progressive Healthcare Center), four Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) in Pennsylvania (Aliquippa, Greensburg, Washington, Uniontown) and one in Ohio (St. Clairsville). It also provides laboratory services to the State Veterans' Home of Western Pennsylvania. It also provides consultation services and is considered a Hub for four VA Medical Centers in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia (Butler, Erie, Altoona and Clarksburg). The Department of Pathology is Academically integrated with the Department of Pathology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and is the site for residents' training in anatomic and clinical pathology, as part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Residency training program.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Provides specialized services such as flowcytometry in hematopathology, immunohistochemistry in histology, therapeutic drug monitoring in clinical chemistry, and Molecular Diagnostic and Legionella epidemiology in microbiology.
- Serves as the pathology reference laboratory for the surrounding region
- Supports special patient care programs of the medical center, such as open heart surgery, liver and kidney transplantation, bariatric surgery and is a national leader in the efforts to control and prevent Hospital acquired MRSA infections.
- Promotes and supports excellence in research and teaching.
