DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY DIVISIONS

SECTION OF LABORATORY MEDICINE

Clinical Microbiology

The Division of Clinical Microbiology oversees the clinical microbiology laboratories and subdivisions of bacteriology, virology, and mycology at UPMC.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Supports special sections in aerobic and anaerobic bacteriology, mycobacteria, and antibiotic sensitivity testing related to the diagnosis and treatment of legion-ellosis, atypical mycobacteria, and herpes viruses

  • Promotes clinical and research activities in bacteriology, virology, and antiviral immunology, with emphasis on cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus infections after transplantation

  • Is one of four NIH-supported Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study groups in the country participating in a major epidemiologic and laboratory study of inception and pathogenesis of HIV infection in gay men

  • Conducts applied research in the detection of Legionella by DNA probes, molecular characterization of antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus fecium, and the use of molecular diagnostic techniques in the detection of cytomegalovirus and gram negative becateria.
