DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY DIVISIONS

SECTION OF LABORATORY MEDICINE

Clinical Hematopathology

The faculty in the Division of Hematopathology are responsible for bone marrow and solid tissue hematopathology services, a large flow cytometry laboratory and the general and special hematology laboratories serving the UPMC-HS and ChildrenŐs Hospital of Pittsburgh. The Division also has two separate research laboratories.

More detailed information about the Division of Hematopathology can be found at: http://path.upmc.edu/divisions/hematopath.html

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Runs a busy diagnostic solid tissue hematopathology in-house and consultation service

  • Integrates morphologic and immuno-phenotypic data together with genotypic analysis and cytogenetic analyses in a single report

  • Interprets marrow biopsies, particle preparations, and aspirations together with peripheral blood smears using a multiparameter approach

  • Performs multicolor state-of-the-art flow cytometric immunophenotypic analysis to characterize hematopoietic and lymphoid proliferations and to follow T-cell subsets in immunosuppressed and immunode-ficient patients

  • Evaluates cell cycle analysis and determines DNA ploidy on hematopoietic and solid tissue specimens using flow cytometric instrumentation

  • Investigates new ways to analyze leukemias and lymphomas

  • Active molecular and white cell function research laboratories

  • Performs specialized hematology testing and manages a large general hematology laboratory
