DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY DIVISIONS

SECTION OF LABORATORY MEDICINE

The Section of Laboratory Medicine encompasses the Divisions of Clinical Chemistry, Hematopathology, Immunopathology, Clinical Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics, and Transfusion Medicine. This structure enhances the interdisciplinary approaches that improve the academic, teaching, and service missions of these Divisions. The individual Divisions present complementary specialized approaches to patient care and education, which in toto represent the whole of Labor-atory Medicine - a clinical approach to patient care directed from an outcomes- and data-based diagnostic testing modality. In addition, the research endeavors of the faculty of this Section are varied from basic cell biological to patient-directed translational investigations; these combined efforts form a large part of the academic mission of the Department of Pathology.

Clinical Chemistry

The Division of Clinical Chemistry coordinates a full range of biochemical analytic services for UPMC-HS and affiliated hospitals and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh through a system of centralized and on-site laboratories incorporated in Central Laboratory Services, Inc.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Provides clinical support through therapeutic drug monitoring, toxicology analysis, hormone and tumor marker assays, biochemical tests for metabolic diseases, and nutrition and lipid analysis

  • Collaborates with the Division of Molecular Diagnostics in molecular analysis for genetic metabolic diseases

  • Conducts research in pharmacoki-netics and assays of novel immuno-suppressants, nutritional assessment of transplant patients, biomarkers for cancers, cholesterol biosynthesis during cell growth and regeneration, programmed cell death (apoptosis), computer applications in clinical labs, and biochemical and molecular genetics of metabolic disorders

  • Develops and evaluates clinical analytic techniques
