Pediatric Pathology Services

The Department of Pathology at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh has five staff pathologists most with certification of special competence in Pediatric Pathology, a neuropathologist, and a pediatric microbiologist. The interests of the staff cover all areas of pediatric diagnostic pathology, and a range of special procedures applicable to pediatric surgical pathology is offered. Special handling is required for some of the procedures, so you are advised to call ahead for particulars.

    Special procedures:

    • Immunohistochemistry, including immunostaining and immunofluorescence, with special panels applicable to pediatric diseases
    • Electron microscopy, for tumors, metabolic disorders, muscle diseases, renal diseases and ciliary dysfunction
    • In situ hybridization for EBV virus
    • Acetylcholinesterase histochemistry, and detection of peptides relevant to Hirschsprung's disease and motility disorders
    • Polymerase chain reaction-based assays for Bordetella pertussis and Chlamydia trachomatis, quantitative EBV-PCR from whole blood

    Areas of interest and expertise:

    • Pediatric liver and kidney
    • Pediatric transplant pathology: liver, small bowel, heart, lung, and kidney
    • Pediatric cytopathology
    • Epstein-Barr virus related diseases
    • Pediatric solid and soft tissue tumors (including, but not limited to, Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, neuroblastoma, Wilms' tumor, and lymphoma)
    • Pediatric brain tumors (glioblastomas, astrocytomas)
    • Histiocytosis and dendritic cell diseases, including Langerhans cell histiocytosis
    • Molecular diagnosis of pediatric infectious diseases
