Thesis Title/Research Topic:
Current Research Description:
Liver disease is the 8th leading cause of mortality in the US. The only long-term cure for chronic liver disease is Orthotopic liver transplantation, which comes with all the expected pitfalls of whole-organ transplantation. While hepatocyte transplantation is being considered as an alternative therapy, hepatocytes are fragile cells. Furthemore, being mature differentiated cells, they are less capable of multipotency and long-term proliferation. My project involves the isolation and characterization of liver progenitor cells or "stem cells" as an alternative cell-based therapy to treat chronic liver diease.
