Research Project Information

Many pulmonary diseases are characterized by loss of cilia along the respiratory epithelium, which hinders mucociliary clearance and leaves lungs vulnerable to infection. Based on data from previous studies and work in our own lab we hypothesize that autophagy plays a role in pulmonary deciliation. The major goals of my research are to develop an in vitro model of bronchial epithelium deciliation and then elucidate the molecular mechanisms that underlie the process of cilia loss.
