GROSS AND MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTIONS:
The specimen consisted of fragments of rubbery firm white to tan tissue. Serial sections revealed cystic areas. Hematoxylin and eosin stained sections showed a prominently desmoplastic neoplasm composed of astrocytes intermixed with scattered neuronal cells. The astrocytic component exhibited moderate cellular pleomorphism with rare mitotic figures. Rare binucleate ganglion-like cells were present. There was no necrosis or endothelial proliferation (Fig 3). Masson-Trichrome stains demonstrated extensive desmoplasia (Fig 4); reticulin stains demonstrated extensive pericellular reticulin (Fig 5). Immunohistochemical studies revealed strong diffuse cytoplasmic staining for glial fibrillary acidic protein in glial cells (Fig 6) and intense cytoplasmic immunoreactivity for synaptophysin (Fig 7), neurofilament or chromogranin (not shown) in neuronal cells. MIB-1 labeling was rare (not shown).
