Microscopic Description -- Mediastinal Mass

MICROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION:

The tumor was thoroughly sampled for histological examination and revealed numerous cysts lined mainly by mature epidermis and its appendages with apocrine, eccrine and sebaceous glands (Figs 7 and 8). Other areas showed structures resembling bronchi with ciliated epithelium, occasional mature cartilage and submucosal glands (Figs 9 and 10). Rare areas of granular aggregates vaguely reminiscent of rete and/or prostate were also noted (Figs 11). No dysplastic, immature or germ-cell elements were seen by H&E staining. Immunohistochemical stains for AFP and HCG were negative.
