Laboratory Identification -- Dizziness and Headache

LABORATORY IDENTIFICATION:

After 24 hours of incubation of CSF and biopsied brain material on blood and chocolate agar plates, there was a few pinpoint, non-hemolytic colonies on blood agar, and moderate growth on chocolate agar with minute colonies (Image 03), which had s distinct sweet, butter-scotch odor. Gram stain showed gram positive cocci in short chains (Image 04). The API 20S was performed for further streptococcal identification, and the cultured organism was identified as Streptococcus intermedius, a number of streptococcus "milleri group" (Image 05). Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) showed the isolated S. intermedius was susceptible to varies antibiotics (Image 06).
