The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is a comprehensive, highly integrated, and dynamic medical center dedicated to providing exemplary patient care, educating the next generation of health care professionals, and advancing basic and clinical research. UPMC encompasses six health sciences schools and a host of clinical facilities, and specialized medical centers including Presbyterian University Hospital, Montefiore University Hospital, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, the Children's Hospital, Magee-Womens Hospital, and the Pittsburgh Veterans Affairs Medical Centers. Most UPMC facilities are located within easy walking distance of the University of Pittsburgh campus.

Core training in pathology is provided to resident trainees at the hospitals noted above. The proximity of the hospitals allows frequent joint conferences, meetings, collaborative research endeavors, and case review.
