Department of Pathology
Post-Sophomore Fellowship in Pathology

The Department of Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine offers special fellowships for US and Canadian medical students who have completed their second year of medical school and wish to spend an additional year of study before proceeding with their medical school education. This in-depth exposure to one area of pathology and to research helps to expose the student to various aspects of investigative, anatomic, and clinical pathology.

The program allows for flexibility, but students typically spend a minimum of three months in research and three months in academic anatomic or clinical pathology practice. Fellows plan the remaining six months of research and practice in accordance with their interests. Research is conducted under the guidance of an established investigator.

Students are given the opportunity to spend additional time in other rotations, such as adult bone marrow pathology; adult lymph node pathology; autopsy pathology; clinical molecular diagnostics; cytogenetics; cytology; DNA/ploidy analysis lab; electron microscopy; flow cytometry laboratory; genetics testing; gene therapy laboratory; hematopathology; infectious diseases; molecular diagnostics; informatics; immunoperoxidase; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; immune response laboratory; muscular dystrophy laboratory; ophthalmic pathology; and pediatric bone marrow or tissue typing.

Those accepted receive a fellowship stipend of $15,000 - $18,000, plus a supplement for insurance, books and journals.

Program starting dates are negotiable, but usually commence in late spring or summer. Applicants must provide the following: an updated curriculum vitae; undergraduate and medical school transcripts; a letter stating the applicant's reason for applying; and the names and addresses of three professional references who are familiar with some aspect of the applicant's training. An interview may be required.

Students enrolled in this program are responsible for personal expenses such as housing, meals, and transportation. Affordable housing is available in neighborhoods close to campus and in nearby suburbs.
