Steven H. Swerdlow, MD
Professor of Pathology

Dr. Swerdlow is the director of the Division of Hematopathology. He oversees a nine member division of hematopathology that has a broad range of investigative, educational and clinical service responsibilities. As the only specialized hematopathology resource in the UPMC Health System, he oversees activities and labortories that benefit the numerous UPMC facilities. He also personally participates in all these activities and serves as an internationally known hematopathologist promoting our department in varied venues in the U.S. and around the world.

Clinical Expertise

Dr. Swerdlow's expertise is in hematopathology with an emphasis on lymph node and related tissue diagnostic hematopathology using a multiparameter approach that incorporates morphology, flow cytometric and immunohistochemical phenotype, cytogenetic, molecular and clinical data. He is also responsible for oversight of the Division's varied clinical activities that include general hematology laboratories, a flow cytometry laboratory and a variety of diagnostic services.

Research Interests

Dr. Swerdlow's research efforts involve the use of a multiparameter approach to better define, diagnose and understand primarily the post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders and selected B-cell & T/NK cell lymphomas. Areas of investigation included the following (some in collaboration with other investigators either at the University of Pittsburgh or elsewhere): multiparameter investigations of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, cytogenetic analysis of high grade B-cell lymphomas, pathogenesis of follicular lymphomas, T cell lymphomas, MYD88 mutations in lymphomas with plasmacytic differentiation, phenotypic recognition of germinal center lymphomas, mantle cell lymphomas with phenotypic/molecular discrepancies, lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates in the breast and additional collaborations as well.
