Clinical Expertise

Dr. Swerdlow's expertise is in hematopathology with an emphasis on lymph node and related tissue diagnostic hematopathology using a multiparameter approach that incorporates morphology, flow cytometric and immunohistochemical phenotype, cytogenetic, molecular, and clinical data. He is also responsible for oversight of the Division's varied clinical activities that include general hematology laboratories, a flow cytometry laboratory, and a variety of diagnostic services.

Research Interests

Dr. Swerdlow's research efforts involve the use of a multiparameter approach to better define, diagnose and understand selected B-cell and some T/NK lymphomas and the post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders. Areas of investigation include the following (some in collaboration with other investigators either at the University of Pittsburgh or elsewhere): The relationship of CLL/SLL to the B-cell follicle, lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates in the breast, IgG4 expression in Zoon’s balanitis, SNP analyses of PTLD, in situ follicular lymphomas, T follicular helper cell antigen expression in T and B cell proliferations, S100 + T-cell neoplasms, ALK negative anaplastic large cell lymphomas and high throughput cytogenetic testing.
