Clinical Expertise

My clinical area of specialty is in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. Towards this end, I am currently the Assistant Director of the UPMC Tissue Typing laboratory. The role of the Tissue Typing lab is to supporting all of the solid organ and bone marrow transplant programs at UPMC, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Pittsburgh by testing patients for HLA antibodies both before transplant to facilitate identification of acceptable immunological risk for candidates. Additionally, we also perform HLA antigen typing for donors and recipients to assist clinicians in matching potential bone marrow and solid organ pairings.

Research Interests

My research interests lie within liver pathophysiology, specifically examining how the gut bacteria colonizing the intestines influence liver immunology. My investigations utilize mouse models either lacking gut flora (germ free mice) or mice with gut bacteria depleted by antibiotics. We are interested in understanding how perturbations in the gut flora can affect the ability of the liver and liver immune cells to respond to injury or stimulation.

A second area of research ties in with my clinical involvement, studying how allograft recipients with HLA antibodies respond to treatments aimed at lowering antibodies, to facilitate transplantation or treat antibody-mediated rejection. I am also interested in better understanding how novel antibody detection methods can better help facilitate transplantation and predict the risk of antibody-mediated rejection.
