Research Interests:
We are investigating the epidemiology and biological properties of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV8), a new human DNA tumor virus discovered in our laboratory. KSHV causes Kaposi's sarcoma, the most common AIDS-associated malignancy as well as two lymphoproliferative disorders: a form of nonHodgkin's B-cell primary effusion lymphoma and a subtype of Castleman's disease (MCD). Through extensive molecular piracy, the KSHV genome contains a wide array of genes which affect host cell proliferation pathways, apoptosis, cell cycle regulation and immune modulation. Tools used in our laboratory include molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and virologic methods.
